FAQs

What is the Bose® FreeSpace DS loudspeaker family?

The Bose FreeSpace DS family is a line of high-quality loudspeakers engineered to provide three distinct levels of audio performance for a wide range of background and foreground music applications. These versatile surface-mount and flush-mount loudspeakers easily integrate into sound systems—indoors and outside—with flexible mounting hardware and optional installation accessories. Complete entire projects with a single family of Bose loudspeakers that deliver consistent high-fidelity sound, installation methods and contemporary styling.

Why did Bose make the FreeSpace DS 40F loudspeaker?

The product goal was to make a loudspeaker that meets the requirements of background and foreground music, and paging applications. This one provides the audio performance, installation flexibility and contemporary styling needed for a wide range of business music installations.

The FreeSpace DS 40F flush-mount loudspeaker was also created to be the counterpart to the DS 40SE surface-mount loudspeaker.

How does the DS 40F loudspeaker fit into the FreeSpace DS loudspeaker family?

The FreeSpace DS family offers models that provide three distinct levels of audio performance appropriate for different business music system applications:

  • DS 16: Background music, paging
  • DS 40: Background and foreground music, paging
  • DS 100: Foreground music, paging

Detailed information about the FreeSpace DS loudspeaker family can be found on page one of the FreeSpace DS loudspeaker family comparison guide.

Is the FreeSpace DS 40F loudspeaker a replacement for another Bose loudspeaker?

Yes. The FreeSpace DS 40F will replace the FreeSpace Model 32 and FreeSpace 102F loudspeakers. The FreeSpace DS 40F is similar to these loudspeakers in terms of performance, and is intended for the same applications.

Why is the FreeSpace DS 40F loudspeaker better than the FreeSpace Model 32 and 102F loudspeakers?

The FreeSpace DS 40F builds upon the Bose core technology of such classic loudspeakers as the FreeSpace Model 32 and 102F by utilizing a 4.5" (114 mm) HVC (Helical Voice Coil) full-range driver. Like these classic products, the FreeSpace DS 40F delivers even frequency response without any crossover abnormalities, and provides a high level of reliability. The new DS 40F driver features design improvements that allow for better sensitivity, higher power handling and greater acoustic output. These improvements allow this loudspeaker to play louder with less distortion. In addition, it does not require active equalization and is voiced to sound similar to the other FreeSpace DS loudspeakers (DS 16, DS 100).

Beyond improvements in performance, the FreeSpace DS 40F features several significant installation improvements and provides more overall flexibility. It features all the same installation methods as the FreeSpace DS 16F and DS 100F loudspeakers. Flush-mount installation is quick and easy, thanks to the three integrated mounting anchors. The loudspeaker can be suspended from open ceilings with a pendant-mount kit accessory. In fact, the DS 40F is compatible with all the same installation accessories as the DS 100F. Its tap can be set from the front of the loudspeaker by turning a thumb wheel. And it is available in both black and white.

For what type of applications is the FreeSpace DS 40F loudspeaker designed?

It is designed for indoor use in background and foreground music, and in speech reproduction sound systems. It is intended for applications that require easy flush-mount or pendant-mount installation. Engineered for mounting heights up to 26 feet (8 m), it is also designed for applications that require life safety compliance.
In addition, this loudspeaker's depth of 6.4" (163 mm) makes it ideal for situations in which a medium-powered, full-range loudspeaker needs to be installed in a shallow ceiling.

An 8 ohm variant is also available for applications in which only low impedance operation is required.

For what types of venues is the FreeSpace DS 40F loudspeaker well-suited?

The FreeSpace DS 40F is well-suited for retail stores, restaurants, bars/nightclubs, houses of worship, hospitality venues, public spaces, offices, meeting rooms, hallways, entrance ways, lobbies and concourses.

An optional square grille accessory is also available for installations in which a square grille complements the architecture and décor.

After the hole is cut, attach the input wires to the rear loudspeaker terminals. If necessary, fasten a safety cable to the seismic tab on the rear of enclosure. Put the loudspeaker in the hole and tighten the three anchors with a screwdriver by turning the three screws marked with triangular arrows on the front baffle. After the loudspeaker is secured in the ceiling, adjust the tap setting as needed, and attach the grille.

Place the loudspeaker into the cosmetic cover and tighten the three loudspeaker anchors to secure the cover. Attach the suspension cables to the three eye screws and hang the entire assembly from the ceiling superstructure.
