What is the Bose® FreeSpace DS loudspeaker family?

The Bose FreeSpace DS family is a line of high-quality loudspeakers engineered to provide three distinct levels of audio performance for a wide range of background and foreground music applications. These versatile surface-mount and flush-mount loudspeakers easily integrate into sound systems—indoors and outside—with flexible mounting hardware and optional installation accessories. What is the FreeSpace DS 40SE loudspeaker?

The FreeSpace DS 40SE is a high-fidelity loudspeaker that delivers background and foreground music with fullness, notable presence and detail, as well as clear, natural-sounding speech reproduction. This 40-watt loudspeaker is designed to be surface mounted at heights up to 26 feet (8 m). It meets numerous standards for combination music and evacuation systems around the world.

Why did Bose make the FreeSpace DS 40SE loudspeaker?

The product goal was to make a loudspeaker that meets the requirements of background and foreground music, and paging applications. This one provides the audio performance, installation flexibility and contemporary styling needed for a wide range of business music installations.

The FreeSpace DS 40SE surface-mount loudspeaker was also created to be the counterpart to the FreeSpace DS 40F flush-mount loudspeaker.

How does the DS 40SE loudspeaker fit into the FreeSpace DS loudspeaker family?

The FreeSpace DS family offers loudspeaker models that provide three distinct levels of audio performance appropriate for different business music system applications:

  • DS 16: Background music, paging

Is the FreeSpace DS 40SE loudspeaker a replacement for another Bose loudspeaker?

Yes. The FreeSpace DS 40SE will replace the FreeSpace Model 32SE loudspeaker. The FreeSpace DS 40SE loudspeaker is similar to this loudspeaker in terms of performance, and is intended for the same applications.

Why is the FreeSpace DS 40SE loudspeaker better than the FreeSpace Model 32SE loudspeaker?

The FreeSpace DS 40SE builds upon the Bose core technology of such classic loudspeakers as the FreeSpace Model 32SE by utilizing a 4.5" (114 mm) HVC (Helical Voice Coil) full-range driver. Like this classic product, the FreeSpace DS 40SE delivers even frequency response without any crossover abnormalities, and provides a high level of reliability. The new FreeSpace DS 40SE driver features design improvements that allow for better sensitivity, higher power handling and greater acoustic output. These improvements allow the DS 40SE to play louder with less distortion. In addition, the DS 40SE does not require active equalization and is voiced to sound similar to the other DS loudspeakers (DS 16, DS 100).

Beyond performance improvements, the FreeSpace DS 40SE features several significant installation improvements and provides more overall flexibility. It features all the same installation methods as the FreeSpace DS 16S, DS 16SE and DS 100SE loudspeakers. Surface-mount installation is quick and easy thanks to the 1→2→3 installation process. It can be mounted to walls, junction boxes, ceilings and poles with optional accessories. In fact, the FreeSpace DS 40SE is compatible with all the same installation accessories as the FreeSpace DS 16S, DS 16SE and DS 100SE loudspeakers. The loudspeaker tap can be set from the front of the loudspeaker by simply turning a thumb wheel. No tools are required.
